What do I hope to get out of ds106?

I am taking this class because I am considering a major in Communication and Digital Studies. This course seemed like a really interesting way to get more familiar with many of the digital processes that will be involved in my major if I choose to go down this path. Last semester, I took Intro to Digital Studies, so I am already familiar with WordPress, photo editing, video editing, and audio editing, but there is definitely so much more that I haven’t had the chance to learn yet. I am excited for the opportunity to get more familiar with these valuable skills and learn new skills that I haven’t had a chance to practice with before.

  • I hope to gain experience with creating things digitally through various platforms and types of media.
  • I want to learn how to effectively express myself or a story through both digital media and written text.
  • I want to grow more comfortable with computers in general, as I frequently get frustrated when I don’t know how to do something.
  • As this is an asynchronous class that requires a lot of work, I hope to be able to improve my time management skills.
  • I am not used to posting often on social media or on my blog, so I hope to get more comfortable with these things as well.
  • Lastly, I want to improve my ability to explain my work, ideas, and processes.

That last point, about explaining your work, is the key to this course. There’s a great book in the library called “Show Your Work! : 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered” https://umw.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=697782&site=ehost-live which you might find worthwhile. I may recommend it to the whole class.
